Center Membership & Study Participation

Participation in BMT CTN trials is available to all center in the United States (U.S.), however, some studies have specific site qualification requirements or permit only limited number of centers due to study size. The per patient reimbursement is the same for all centers. Membership (Core vs Affiliate) determines how a center participates.

There are two types of BMT CTN Centers:

Affiliate Centers

Any U.S. center that is not a Core Center may participate as an Affiliate Center. Affiliate Centers must apply to participate in each study by submitting the Application for Participation as an Affiliate Clinical Center in the BMT CTN form. Please note that a center, that has not enrolled patients on a BMT CTN trial within the past three years, will be required to submit additional information. Affiliate Centers are required to execute a master agreement with the BMT CTN; each study requires a separate rider to this agreement.

Affiliate Centers may also qualify to appoint a voting member to the Steering Committee membership for a 2-year term by enrolling at least 12 patients in at least 2 BMT CTN studies during a 12-month period. A yearly review of Affiliate Center participation (review period July 1 – June 30) determines which Affiliate Centers qualify for the 2-year Steering Committee membership. Membership includes voting privileges and travel reimbursement for in-person meetings. The term is renewable if an Affiliate Center maintains the minimum accrual requirements. Core Centers

There are 20 Core Centers including 11 Core Centers that are consortia of 2 or more centers. One consortium is the Pediatric Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Consortium (PTCTC) consisting of 100+ pediatric centers. The National Institute of Health (NIH) awards Core Center grants for a specific grant cycle from among applicants to a Request for Applications (RFA); the current grant cycle ends in June 2024. New Core Centers cannot be added during a grant cycle. The next 7-year grant cycle will start in July 2024 (RFA).

Core Centers may participate in all BMT CTN studies, without a formal application, unless there is a limitation on number of sites. Opportunities for Investigators to Participate in Network Activities

BMT CTN provides many opportunities for investigators including new and early-stage investigators to participate in the Network. Individuals interested in any of the opportunities below are encouraged to talk to their BMT CTN site PI to pursue the nominations process, since, in general centers are limited to only one representative on Protocol Teams, Committees and Task Forces.

  • Serve as Local PI / Enroll Patients on a Study
  • Serving as your center’s PI or Sub-PI for a BMT CTN study and/or enrolling patients on studies are great ways to be involved in the Network’s research.  Individuals may be site PIs for more than one BMT CTN trial.

 

  • Participate in Steering Committee meetings
  • Steering Committee calls and in-person meetings are open to all U.S. investigators at participating Core and Affiliate Centers

  • Apply to serve on a Protocol Team
  • Nominations are solicited for every new Protocol Team via Steering Committee membership emails.
  • This is an excellent way for new or early-stage investigators to gain experience in designing a multicenter clinical trial.
  • Nominees must be from centers that plan to participate in the study.

  • Apply to serve as a Committee Member
  • Participating on Committees is an excellent way for new and early-stage investigators to get to know the Network and meet colleagues from other centers. The BMT CTN has 8 Technical Committees. Terms are for 3-years and nominations are solicited annually. See Technical Committees page for details.
  • There are ad hoc Committees charged with evaluating a certain topic or issue. Solicitations for nominations are sent via email to the Steering Committee distribution list.

  • Serve as a Medical Monitor
  • Each new study requires a Medical Monitor at study activation.
  • Medical Monitors are physicians familiar with the conduct of clinical research and regulatory requirements for safety monitoring and reporting.
  • To avoid bias, they may not enroll patients or care for patients enrolled in a study on which they serve as Medical Monitor.
  • Medical Monitors are financially compensated for their work.

  • Participate on an Endpoint Review Committee
  • A study-specific Endpoint Review Committee (ERC) conducts a review of the data informing study endpoints, confirms subject eligibility, and assesses protocol compliance.
  • The Protocol Chairs nominate ERC members and include protocol team members and/or early-stage investigators.

  • Submit a Correlative Study Proposal
  • The BMT CTN has a vast collection of research samples and clinical data from BMT CTN trials. Investigators at all career stages are encouraged to submit a proposal for ancillary or secondary analyses to use these resources.
